Who We Are

Orongo Widows and Orphans CBO

This is a registered community-based organisation rooted in Orongo village, Buoye sub-location, Kolwa East location, Kisumu East Sub-County, Kisumu County, Kenya.

Founded in 2009, we began as a small group of passionate community members who recognised the acute suffering of women who had lost their husbands and the children left without parental care. Over the years, we have grown into a structured organisation with focused programs, dedicated staff, and a network of community volunteers.

Our work is built on the principle that every person — regardless of their circumstances — deserves dignity, support, and the opportunity to thrive. We work directly within our community, understanding its unique challenges and strengths, to design and deliver programs that truly make a difference.

Our Purpose

Mission & Vision

Our Mission

To mobilise vulnerable groups and build individual capacity for orphans, widows, the abjectly poor, the abused, and the very elderly — particularly those still having dependants — through targeted, community-led programs that restore dignity, promote self-reliance, and foster resilience.

Our Vision

A community in Kisumu East where every orphan has access to education and care, every widow has the means to sustain her family, every household has food security, and the health of all community members — especially youth and women — is promoted and protected.

Community Profile

Orongo is a village in the lakeside region of Kisumu — one of Kenya's most vibrant cities located on the shores of Lake Victoria. The area has a high proportion of widows and orphaned children, many of whom lack access to basic education, healthcare, and food security.

Our CBO was formed precisely in response to this reality, bringing together community members who share a deep commitment to changing the trajectory of vulnerable lives through grassroots action.
